Essential Driver Training (EDT)

Since 4th April, 2011, learner drivers in Ireland have been required to undertake Essential Driver Training (EDT) in order to get their full driving licence. It is part of the RSA´s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme and is intended to improve road safety.

The purpose of this is to ensure a higher standard of driving and safety in newly qualified drivers.

Lessons

The course consists of 12, 1 hour lessons. Each lesson has a set of expected outcomes describing what you should be able to do by the end of the lesson. It is important to remember that the EDT course alone is not enough to make you a competent driver and additional lessons and practise with your sponsor should be used to bring your skills to a suitable level before progressing on to the next EDT course lesson.

The RSA recommend that you leave at least two weeks between each EDT lesson to allow for further instruction, practice and learning. The EDT course is best spread out over six months.

Log Book

When you start your first EDT lesson with Adrian, you will be given an official logbook where he will record the details of your training and progress, as well as any preparation needed for your next lesson. You can familiarise yourself with the format by viewing a sample logbook

Sponsors

A Sponsor is someone who must hold a full license for two years and must have lots of driving experience. They will help and support you as you improve your driving skills with practice drives in between lessons with your instructor. A sponsor should be someone that you feel confident and comfortable with. Please note that a sponsor cannot accept payment.
